Martinez Bros: Four-on-the-Floor Prodigies

November 4 2008 • Text by Rico "Superbizzee" Washington

At the dawning of the 21st century, the DJ is on the brink of becoming a cliché.

When the mastery of Serato Scratch and a well-stocked iTunes library are the only criteria necessary to rock a party, craftsmanship and a near life-support-like dependency on music seem to be long-forgotten prerequisites.

But Bronx-bred brothers Steve and Chris Martinez are insistent on bucking the trend on a few different levels. At 19 and 16 years of age respectively, The Martinez Brothers exhibit an impressive dexterity as DJs and an intimate connection with a genre of music deeply ingrained in their DNA: house. They’re an anomaly of their generation, and not just because they’ve spun crowds into frenzies in Ibiza, Hong Kong, London, and Switzerland before they’ve even hit legal drinking age.

They’re two teens who hail from the birthplace of hip-hop but who have eschewed the path of jockeys like Cipha Sounds and Whoo Kid for the trajectory of house legends like Kerri Chandler and Dennis Ferrer. They’re known to rock the dancefloor with their mélange of disco, soulful house, and tech-house, and all the styles converge on their 12” single, “My Rendition.”

Damon Dash: From record & fashion big shot to has-been mogul

E-mail Print

Friday, November 14th 2008, 4:00 AM

A bank wants his Tribeca condos, the city is seizing his SUV and his lawyer dropped him for not paying his legal bills.

It's not easy being Damon Dash, has-been hip-hop mogul.

The co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records and Rocawear - who in 2005 sold his share in the clothing empire to Jay-Z for $20 million - is under assault in Manhattan Supreme Court from lawyers, lenders and landlords fed up with not getting paid.

The fall has been a dizzying one for Dash, who has gone from owning Keds, a vodka company and 1,300 pairs of shoes to dodging bills and accusing a former accountant of ripping him off for millions of dollars.

"I've worked with musicians, artists and entertainers that in the eyes of the media are very wealthy," said lawyer Jason Gabbard, who represented a fashion firm that settled a suit against Dash and his wife over $148,505 in unpaid fees. "But to borrow a phrase from my Kentucky homeland, they haven't got a pot to p--- in - they're broke."

THE B SIDES

AT ALJIRA CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ART

OPENING RECEPTION SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 22ND

5:30PM-8:30PM

http://www.aljira.org/exhibitions/

Dear friends,

Muema (founder and photog of www.bouncefm.com) and Lorie Caval worked on a artistic collaboration series, we named Mash-Ups (my photography/her painting). This series, along with some of my other work was chosen for inclusion in the upcoming B-Sides group exhibit - I am very happy to say. The B-Sides opening reception will take place this coming Saturday night... and from what I understand the curator is planning quite a party (as well as an after party, or two)! Please come by if you are able (and bring your art-loving friends, the reception is open to the public), wear dancing shoes. All the information for the opening, as well as the on-going B-Sides exhibit is listed below. Hope to see you there!

Regards,

Lorie*

One of our favorite mixers is back with another hot mix for your ear drums. This mix takes us back to the motherland. Mama Africa!

01. jb conga intro some words from the godfather
02. alhaji k. frimpong & his cubano fiestas - hwehwe mu na yi wo m Rumba-Congolaise meets Ghanian highlife. Too bad Mr. frimpong didn't live to see his track become an international hit in clubs last year
03. c.k. mann & his carousel 7 - asafo beson another funky mix of highlife and soul from mid 70s ghana. guitar is straight outta shaft
04. tony allen - afro disco beat just recently discovered this instrumental track. kerri chandler fans will recognize the bassline
05. the sweet talks - eyi su ngaangaa this is where the mix starts to pick up a bit more. Ghana strikes again
06. oscar sulley & the uhuru dance band - bukom mashie people need to play this shit in clubs more. Bassline is wicked and unrelenting
07. ashanti afrikah jah - onyame gorgeous gorgeous track that floats along nicely
08. mulata astatqe - yégellé tezeta I first heard this Ethiopian track in the Jarmusch movie "Broken Flowers". somebody needs to sample this shit like NOW.
09. marijata - mother africa Seems like there was some serious parties going down in Ghana in 1975
10. fela kuti - suffering and shmiling (edit) did a little edit to include a bit of the instrumental at the beginning. rich medina played this at the last jump-n-funk party and I was like "damn I need to put that song on a mix!"
11. babatunde olatunji - jin-go-lo-ba always wanted to put this Nigerian classic on a mix and blend in the Candido version
12. candido - jingo I was tempted to add in the Santana version too, but 20 minutes of one song, even a great song like this, is just a bit too much ya know?
13. shina williams & his african percussionists - aboju logun this sounds so much like a talking heads song it's not even funny. there's actually a UK 12" of this track from 1984 but I've never seen it
14. the funkees - dancing time more mid-70s Nigerian funk
15. ebo taylor - atwer abroba One more Ghana jam to wrap things up

Download after the jump.
