Arts Electric

We're redesigning our internet presence. Please have a look.

In fact, have a look at Arts Electric every week. You'll find stories, articles, reports, sound clips, photos, and interviews about our events and about events worldwide.

And check the archives for recent and past years' news items. You'll find a fascinating series of articles by Phil Dadson reporting on his trip in India. Tim Ward reports on Electromediaworks 08 in Athens, Neil Rolnick writes about his trip to China, Alessandro Cipriani reports on the Acousmonium in Rome, Milica Paranosic writes on Sónar, and there's an article on Xenakis' Oresteia in New York. There's more. We're writing a history of our time.

Look also at the EMF Productions site. You'll find the details of Ear to the Earth 08 and other upcoming productions. And you'll soon find a soon-to-be-completed history of our past productions.

In the department of internet upgrade, there's more coming. But for the moment ...

Ear to the Earth

"Modern ecologists may have reached a limit on how effectively they can convey messages to the public, and they may now need to draw upon the emotional vibrancy offered by the arts."

At this time, more than 50% of the world's population lives in cities. Ecology must now include urban as well as natural soundscapes.

The 2008 installment of Ear to the Earth, a unique festival of music, sound art, multimedia, and ecology, will take place in New York City between October 9 and October 25. Among the highlights is the launch of New York Soundscape, a multi-year project to create a panoramic portrayal of the city's audio personality and urban ecology by composers, sound artists, students, and New Yorkers from all walks of life.

New York Soundscape includes New York Big Fritz, portraits of the sound field in Times Square at noon, 6pm, midnight, and 6am; Francisco López's Trilogy of the Americas; new works commissioned from Walter Branchi, Alvin Curran, Michael Schumacher, Marina Rosenfeld, Miya Masaoka, Richard Lainhart, and Lo Vid; Citizen Sound, a public forum on urban ecology; Metropolis New York, a public forum on culture-driven urban development; and Cloud Car, a mobile installation to spew mist and special-effects visual smoke on certain New York streets.

The festival also includes concerts of instrumental music with an ecological bent and soundscapes from other parts of the world.

And the festival closes with a star-studded performance of John Cage's Lecture on the Weather.
