NYSAE also hosted a concert featuring a NYC Sounds collage performed by Jeremy Slater, Andrea Williams and Edmund Mooney with video projections by Jeremy Slater. This spontaneous microcosm of New York City sounds will be followed by SOUNDBOX2 — a spontaneously created piece of “experimental” music where the performers will experiment with the sounds of objects gathered on this evening’s soundwalks intermingling them with the sounds of other objects and devices. Jonny Farrow and Edmund Mooney will conduct these sound experiments within the rarified airspace of an 18″ x 12″ x 12″ plexiglass cube, projecting a live video feed of the cube.

Jonny Farrow is a sound artist, composer and performer of new sound works, is co-chair of the New York Society for Acoustic Ecology, and has an M.A. in musicology. His compositions and performances make use of instruments, field recordings, the sounds of small objects and other prepared sounds. He often creates a theatrical element for the presentation of his works highlighting the relationship of the artist’s body to sound-making practice. Website: www.jonnyfarrow.net
Jeremy D. Slater is a sound artist essentially, but also works with video and sound in performance and installation settings. He uses his laptop computer to create a variety of sound, image, and interactive work. Jeremy was one of the 1999 recipients of the Computer Art Fellowship from New York Foundation of the Arts (NYFA) and has exhibited and performed nationally and internationally. http://www.jeremyslater.net

Citizen sound featured Geographer Amanda Huron and addressed the following:
How is noise affecting our health? Who controls what we hear? How is our soundscape changing? Sound in our city is central to our quality of life. Constant exposure to noise can have dramatic effects on our health, both physical and psychological, and on our ability to learn and communicate. Effective urban sound design can have a dramatic positive impact, yet is rarely considered in urban planning and development.
Amanda Huron is a geographer who principally studies questions of urban land, housing, city planning and contested urban space. She is a PhD student at the CIty University of New York Graduate Center, and also teaches classes in the urban studies department at Hunter College. She has performed much of the cartographic work on the Mannahatta Project, which seeks to depict the ecological communities and plant and animal species of Manhattan in 1609; leads workshops on mapping and social justice; and is particularly interested in how young people make and use maps. She came to sound mapping through her strong interest in the geography of microradio, and her appreciation of musical noise.

Film and videomaker Julia Haslett makes expressionistic documentaries on contemporary and historical subjects. Her films have screened at festivals and galleries across the U.S. and broadcast on PBS. She has worked at WGBH-Boston and as a Filmmaker-in-Residence at the Stanford University Center for Biomedical Ethics. Julia has been a fellow at the MacDowell Colony and is an M.F.A. candidate in Hunter College’s Integrated Media Arts program. Currently, she is editing An Interview with Simone Weil, a long-format documentary inspired by French thinker and labor activist Simone Weil.
Blake McDowell is an active musician and media maker. He is currently studying in the IMA program at Hunter College. In addition, he plays organ and synthesizer in local NYC metal outfit Bloody Panda and is member of Gamelan Kusuma Laras, the local Javanese gamelan orchestra housed in the Indonesian Consulate. He is also a co-DJ of Promise and Warning, an internet radio show on Viva Radio and has been working with Paper Tiger TV for several years.
Graphic designer and digital artist Robin Locke Monda is enrolled in the Hunter College Integrated Media Arts MFA (IMA-MFA) program. She is studying the potential for digital media to extend social and political dialogue beyond established corporatist and marketplace concerns. Specifically, she is interested in the use of the Internet to foster political thought, community action and creative production. Locke Monda is the creator and the major contributor to www.bordertalksblog.com. She was the designer, web master and managing editor of Hunter College professor Stuart Ewen’s, www.rejectedletterstotheeditor.com.

NYSAE hosted three events this Wednesday the 15th at the Ear to the Earth Festival at Judson Church.

Organized by EMF and the New York Society for Acoustic Ecology (NYSAE), Walking Through Sound was a series of guided listening tours through various New York City neighborhoods and parks. These soundwalks, conducted by NYSAE members Andrea Williams and Edmund Mooney, with Kevin Allen and Victoria Estok led participants to experience places by listening to them closely.
Andrea Williams writes:
“A soundwalk is a walk that focuses on listening closely to the sounds of a particular environment. It’s a way to experience a new place or an already familiar one with an entirely new perspective. I encourage people to listen to an area somewhat similarly to how one would study a landscape painting, searching for the figure and ground of the piece. Sounds that are heard most frequently but perhaps more unconsciously like air conditioner drones in the summer would represent the ground, or the keynote, the anchor of the composition. Then there are the sound signals, the figures that come and go in the foreground, the 360 degree foreground. Soundmarks are like landmarks and they are the unique sonic characteristics of a particular neighborhood that if taken away, psychologically it would greatly impact the daily life of the community.
“Soundwalking can also be thought of as creating a composition where the score is developed by the guide’s mapping of the walk, the timeframe given, and the group’s participation with the environment in the chosen area. Each walk becomes a collaborative composition, with the roles of audience, composer, and performer becoming interchangeable throughout the walk. And often there is a sense of amazement about being able to hear the fine details in life that are quite pleasurable just by walking around with a focus on listening.

Andrea Williams, sound artist, acoustic ecologist, has presented her perceptually immersive work at the Whitney Museum, New Langton Arts Gallery, Wave Farm, The National Arts Club, and in the Brazilian rainforest. Kevin T. Allen is an award-winning filmmaker and sound artist living in Brooklyn. He has created sound-installation work for the Canadian Centre for Architecture Third Coast International Audio Festival and is an independent radio producer for APM’s Weekend America. His work has led him to explore the soundscapes of Sri Lanka, India, Vietnam, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and a piano bar in Greenwich Village. He recently completed a yearlong audio-visual project called American Transit (www.american-transit.org). His most recent film, KIEU, won first-prize at the Black Maria Film Festival and was featured on Michigan Public Broadcasting.
Edmund Mooney is a composer, sound designer and sound artist. His work has been presented at Lincoln Center, The Metropolitan Museum, DTW and PS 122, among others. Recent works include “Body Maps” with Vision into Art at the Whitney Museum and “Eros Thanatos” with installation artist Erika Harrsch at the Seoul International Media Art Biennale.
Known for her vagueness and penetrating stare - Victoria Estok is the kind of person who is not exactly well known but then again not easily forgotten either. Before deciding to go back to school she worked as an environmental educator and advocate in both urban and backcountry settings. It was during this time she became aware of a deep seated need to uncover the intentions behind everyday actions. She is interested in expressing emotional undercurrents and ideas through sculpture, sound, and electronics.
