On Oct. 6, 2005 friends, colleagues, students and admirers of Steve Lacy gathered for a tribute concert at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City. Produced by the World Music Institute, Thomas Buckner, and Verna Gillis/Soundscape. The event brought together former members of his bands, others who had never played the music before, and his wife and muse Irene Aebi. This program features excerpts from that evening plus a bonus track of Lacy's group in 1969.
Steve Lacy (1934-2004) was the great soprano saxophonist whose composing and playing embraced jazz styles from Dixieland to the avant-garde. He released over fifty albums; collaborated with musicians including Cecil Taylor, Mal Waldron, and Gil Evans; and worked with dancers including Merce Cunningham. In 1992 he received a MacArthur Foundation genius grant and also France's highest artistic honor (he lived there for 32 years). (60 minutes)
