Description

"A Tribute to" is an hour long radio program paying hommage to a different music legend each episode. Each installment is hosted by industry insiders, leading experts, and die-hard fans, bringing a unique personality to each show.

Genre's range from 60's dynamo Jim Morrison and latin Legend Celia Cruz to underground icon Harry Nilsson. Hosts discuss the artists history as well as their take on lyrics, the Producers, and contributing songwriters.

The Show is Produced and Directed by Record Label executive Sherrie Fell who selects the guests and featured artists.

Celia Cruz's music career spanned over a half century and produced more than eighty albums. Ana Cristina Reymundo, collaborator on Celia My Life, an Autobiography says, "Within twenty minutes of meeting Celia Cruz she had changed my life forever." The beloved Cuban exile died in July, 2003 but will forever be remembered as the voice of Cuba. Ralph Mercado, her manager and the man responsible for popularizing salsa music around the world and Johnny Pacheco, the maestro of salsa music and founder of the Fania All Stars, talk with host Kathy Barrett about the extraordinary life and music of Celia Cruz, the Queen of Salsa.

Edition #6: A Tribute to: Harry Nilsson

Listen as a brother and sister--actor/director Harry O'Reilly and music producer Bernadette O'Reilly--tell the stories behind the songs of Harry Nilsson and recount the impact on their lives. His music affected many who didn't even know him. In the mid '60s alone Nilsson wrote a few songs with Phil Spector that were recorded by the Ronettes and the Modern Folk Quartet. The Monkees recorded his tune, Cuddly Toy and the Yardbirds did Ten Little Indians. Harry's songs were also recorded by The Turtles, Rick Nelson, Lulu, Blood, Sweat and Tears as well as Mary Hopkin. That's just the start.

Actor/Director Harry O'Reilly wrote, directed and starred in the indie feature, Crooked Lines, and starred in the much lauded series Homefront. He has had also appeared in countles feature films and television shows, including Law and Order, Sex and the City, Oz, and The Practice. Bernadette O'Reilly is a veteran producer and songwriter who began her career as an agent for live performance working with Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld and Dennis Miller.

Bernadette O'Reilly, producer and writer from Nelson-O'Reilly Productions, and Kristina Tunzi of Billboard Magazine play some rarely heard selections and assorted hits by The Doors. Kristina gives a detailed account of her trip to where Jim Morrison is buried, the Poet's Corner of Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. Bernadette explores the production side of the Doors, including why Paul Rothchild left as Producer. She examines the connection between Rothchild, Bruce Botnick (who replaced him) and Tim Buckley. Plus thoughts on the musicality, playfullness, originality and chrisma of Morrison.

Edition #4: A Tribute to: Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terell

Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell were destined for stardom but they didn't explode onto the charts until they were individually signed to Motown and paired to sing duets. The great insight of Berry Gordy and his decision to team writing and production greats Harvey Fuqua, Valerie Simpson and Nicholas Ashford with Gaye and Terrell made music history.

Nelson George is a writer, filmmaker and cultural critic who's professional credits include the Amsterdam News, Billboard and the "Native Son" column for the Village Voice. He's written several influential fiction and non-fiction books, including "Where Did Our Love Go: The Rise and Fall of the Motown Sound," "The Death of Rhythm & Blues" and, as co-author, Russell Simmons' autobiography "Life and Def." As a filmmaker, he produced "Everyday People" for HBO, now available on DVD.

Kathy Barrett left corporate America to pursue her passion for documenting the human spirit. She is a contributing writer to The New Sun Newspaper. Her performance piece titled, "The Menopause Confessions," has been aired on WBAI radio in New York. Her first book, "A Woman On The Verge," is in production and she is also preparing to shoot "Visions," a documentary about the late folk artist Howard Finster and his Paradise Gardens.

A personal tribute to Judy Garland (1922-69) by a dedicated, devoted lifelong fan and collector of the singer/actress' recordings and memorabilia. The show investigates and illustrates her originality, emotionality, passion, joy and pain, including her unique gift of immersion and abandon in the act of performing. Mr. Summers also plays a number of rarely heard versions of famous songs and duets.

John Summers was born in Ft Lauderdale, Florida and trained with Ruth Petrinovic at The Atlantic Foundation for the Performing Arts. In 1983 he was hired by Mikhail Baryshnikov to become a member of American Ballet Theatre where he remained for eight years. He went on to appear in musicals, films and TV.

Producer Sherrie Fell and host Kathy Barrett present a conversation with Nadine Cohodas, author of "Queen: The Life And Music of Dinah Washington" (companion CD "Queen" on Verve Records); Farris Kimbrough, sister of Dinah Washington and organizer of The Dinah Washington Birthday Tribute to be held in Harlem, August, 2005; and Yvette Freeman", Obie Award winner for her portrayal of Dinah in "Dinah Was." Dinah Washington was considered to be the Stradivarius of voices. Quincy Jones said, "She had the pipes of life..." In 1940, at the age of 15, Dinah Washington went from singing in her church choir to winning the Regal Amateur Hour talent contest. Lionel Hampton went to see her perform at a local Chicago club, and at the height of his popularity, he hired her to be the featured singer in his band. This tribute explores the extraordinary life and music of Dinah, including the personal demons, that led to her premature demise at the age of thirty-nine. Hosts Bernadette O'Reilly and Ida Langsam pay tribute to the lives and work of these two great pop musicians through personal recollections and favorite songs.

Once the secretary for the Official Beatles Fan Club in the New York area, Ida Langsam is a music publicist whose clients have included Barry Manilow, Linda Ronstadt, Alice Cooper, The Grateful Dead, among others.

Bernadette O'Reilly is a veteran producer and songwriter who began her career as an Agent for Live Performance working with Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld and Dennis Miller. She has also been an instructor at the Songwriters Hall of Fame and was also project supervisor for Chaka Khan's "Classikhan."
