Garifuna artist, Andy Palacio (1960-1988) passed suddenly at age 46 January 2008. He is a national hero to the Garifuna people and population of Belize. Through his musical creations he's preserved the roots of Garifuna rhythms and language, as well as, preserving the history through his lyrics telling the stories passed on from generation to generation and current history and struggles of the Garifuna culture. The entire country of Belize it seemed gathered for his funeral march through the streets as Garifuna drumming was heard in commemoration throughout the country for days and Palacio's music constantly playing on the radio. Palacio's album "Watina" had just won the most prestigeous world music award, WOMAX along with Ivan Duran in 2006 as Watina internationally garnered praise and charted all over the world raising awareness of the endangered Garifuna culture. Ivan Duran's label, Stone Tree has long been dedicated to capturing Garifuna artists on his label that includes Andy Palacio, Aurelio Martinez, Paul Nabor and others. Enjoy this smidgen of amazing Garifuna music that only begins to touch on the incredible catalog of musical gems Andy Palacio has left on his own label Cumbancha, as well as, Stone Tree, in keeping alive the Garifuna culture for many generations to come!

The following set was featured January 26th and 27th during the first live streaming event from the Museum of Modern Art entitled Feminist Future. Jeannie Hopper was the radio commentator for the event and created this set in honor of female musical from the past to present on the soulful tip. You can hear Jeannie's dance sets in the WPS1 DJ Sessions as well as her on going series DJ Culture featuring in depth interviews especially focused on independent artists presenting their productions and giving insight on the scene and behind the scene. Her radio show Liquid Sound Lounge airs on wbai 99.5fm Saturdays, 7p to 9:30p, and is the longest running prime time freeform radio show dedicated to soulful based independent artists ranging from downtempo, uptempo to no tempo and the spoken word. This mix is dedicated in memorium to Alice Coletrane.

Jeannie explores some great music collections to explore and learn more. We start out with a Shawn Lee (hyper link to his set in WPS1 DJ Sessions) remix of Thievery Corporation and lead cut on the latest ESL collection celebrating their 100th release which is a big achievement for independent labels in this new millennium. Boozoo Bajou's second edition of Juke Joint can fool you and sound like a collection of old tunes, but they're new cats keepin' the torch lit with new tunes in the spirit of the old. Music for Dancefloors was a great series of collections released by Strut Records featuring rarities pulled from the vaults of old music libraries. Featured in the mix you'll find the Cream of the Bosworth Library Sessions which was a library of tunes used for old 70's TV flicks and advertisements. Defected Records label boss, Simon Dunmore (see WPS1 DJ Sessions), created a sweet double cd release of disco-fied dance classics to rock your world. ObliqSound has a new remix collection featuring their fabulous roster of experimental jazz artists. The mix than flows into selections from new full length albums including Brazilian Girls, Imani Uzuri and Kaskade.

Jeannie focuses on independent record labels and artists doing it by themselves through independent labels and self-releases. We start with Roy Ayers and the theme of the show. Roy had a sweet deal back in the 70s when he signed a production contract that declared he could do as he pleased with the selections that the label chose not to release, thus the Virgin Ubiquity series. Groove Collective like Roy who had albums released on major labels, then chose to go independent again and released this timeless cut on Jeannie Hopper's own label Liquid Sound Lounge in the 90s. LeDerrick Horne delivers a poetic performance on his first full length album. As a poetry album it's got the perfect balance of music and words for those who like or 'not so like' poetry. He's produced by and featured on Todd Gardner's label Certified Organic out of New Jersey. Local Brooklyn poetry talents collectively known as Second 2 Last also achieve a perfect balance of spoken vocals and music on their full length Babble On. Motor City native Jeremy Ellis can rock a crowd with a drum machine using his elbows, chin and knees while playing keyboards too. HipBone Records is quite a diverse universe when it comes to the many genres they dabble in, from club music to blues. Alexis P. Suter and the HipBone band gained notoriety when Levon Helm fell in love with the group and now features them monthly at his Catskill studio sessions/live peformances in a big old converted barn. The show takes a different direction focusing on music that's got that electronic and analog fusion from a worldly perspective with sounds from Senegal by Amadou and Mariam, North Africa by Cheb I. Sabbah and the far east by Anoushka Shankar topped off with a remix of Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

So many styles of music yet so little diversity when tuning in to the terrestrial radio dial here in the USA. This is a reflective mix on how styles emerge then take a dip out of the popular culture yet continue on just as fiercely. Host and DJ Jeannie Hopper waxes poetic on subjects from the advent of the acid jazz scene to the spoken word scene of the early 90s; and shares perspective and examples in her tune selections illustrating how it all carries on. The session closes out with an African-to-Middle Eastern electronic fusion twist.

Starting out the set you'll hear the classic sound of Rahsaan Roland Kirk then Pharoah Sanders accompanying Will Calhoun. Eric Truffaz continues the soothing side of the set into the classic trippy Warning Talk, Part One from David Axelrod followed by a moment of Spiritual Evolution from newcomer S.E.V.A. The mix moves from jazz into a groovier tempo soaked with conscious lyrical thoughts captured in song and poetry including the amazing Sekou Sundiata, Rich Medina, Lou Rawls, and Balkan Beatbox. Do some googling on these artists and you'll be pleasantly surprised to find a world of music and thoughts so humane you'll believe peace just may have a chance or at least for an hour while listening to Liquid Love.

Loads of new jams featured from Jeannie's arsenal of soon to be released fall albums. Si*Se's new long awaited album and second full length release, along with Nickodemus' first full length are a must to add to your collection. Gavin Hardkiss aka Hawke and Toscas new albums are also long awaited and full of funky beats and clever lyrics. Kraftwerk's new album features new productions recorded live during various performances (the WPS1 Radio crew caught a glimpse first hand at the Venice Biennale 2005 and had rave reviews and wild stories). Kudu is a new avante-pop band that fits in to the art band category (whether they know it or not yet!) with a Moloko meets Scissor Sisters sassyness. And when you are restricted by FCC censorship on the ole terrestrial am/fm dial (as Jeannie is on her show Liquid Sound Lounge on WBAI 99.5fm Sat 7p-9:30p), she has fun playing the Brazilian Girls fabulous Pussy song for uncensored WPS1. It's her homage to George Carlin who spoke the seven dirty words that went down in history as a no no according to the FCC, and WBAI is in fact where it happened that led to the ruling.

Jeannie has found her theme song thanks to Roy Ayers and his newly released tune "Liquid Love" from the vaults of his unreleased material from the late 70's. Joan Armatrading classic "Like Fire" is redone by NY's Ekayani and her healing band. Hugh Masekala is reworked by Carl Craig with a heady hypnotic electro rhythm. Bonga the Voodoo priest works his ensemble through a vocal chanting piece with hand percussion creating a lovely organic vibe. The second half of the mix flows through some new Brazilian-centric electronic fusion groups along with the stellar Thievery Corp. cut "The Hearts a Lonely Hunter" featuring the distinct vocals of David Burns. Jeannie goes on about this summers' WPS1 Warm Up 2005 that you just can't miss if you're in New York this summer.
