DJ Selly of Ubiquita spins a soulful set with a taste of R&B and hip hop recorded here in the Clocktower studios in March 2006. Selly is one of three resident DJs rockin' the Ubiquita party that's been going for five years drawing a crowd that's seriously into the music tapestry these ladies weave on two floors. Many fabulous guest DJs too, from N'dea Davenport of the Brand New Heavies to Carol C of Si*Se. The party takes place Thursday nights at Sutra on the lower east side of Manhattan and also includes resident DJs Reborn and Moni Pineda who will soon join their sister DJ in contributing some seriously eclectic and fabulous sets for WPS1 DJ Sessions.
Jeffrey "Menergy" Sfire's introduction to the underground dance scene and illegal warehouse parties of Detroit occurred at the age of 15 and led him to some of that city's most talented DJs and musicians. After numerous club residencies, he now regularly plays in LA, Detroit, Chicago, and New York, consistently offering a finely-tuned selection of Italo Disco, 80s High Energy, New Disco and Electro.
Siano was the owner/designer/DJ of the legendary seventies dance palace THE GALLERY, a club that inspired The Garage and Studio 54, for which he was one of the original DJs. He inspired and launched the careers of Grace Jones, D.C. La Rue, Loleatta Holloway, Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles. It was no coincidence that when Steve Rubelle opened Studio 54 he chose Siano as one of the two original DJs. Continuing his work at The Gallery on the weekends, Siano weaved his magic during the week at many legendary clubs, including Le Jardin, The Grand Ballroom, Galaxy 21, The Limelight, Enchanted Gardens, Hurrah, The Botel, The Buttermilk Bottom and, of course, Studio 54. In 1977, he became the first DJ to produce a record -- the underground classic "Kiss Me Again" on Sire Records, which went on to sell more than 300,000 copies.
From 1984 until 1998, Siano worked with people with AIDS. He wrote the best selling AIDS manual "No Time to Wait" in 1993. To this day, Siano considers his work with PWA's his most important work.
Ispira Records was started in 2004 by Siano, with its first release "Smoking it" by Automagic becoming a dance floor staple at the Loft and many other major clubs around the world.

Who is Bob Sinclar?
An international man of mystery. Since he first emerged in 1976 his career path has taken in spy, jewel thief. Riviera playboy, mercenary, arms smuggler, Monte Carlo card shark, Studio 54 bellboy, high-class gigolo, sunglasses model and hardcore porn star!!? That's how his bio reads. But one things for sure, he's the man behind a favorite record label of DJ's, Yellow Records. The label features a series of tribal based afro-centric stomping peak hour cuts that seem to without fail universally work crowds into a dancing frenzy. Various producers are selected to give a make over to tribal classics and/or create their own original stompers that make up the Africanism series. The hugely successful Africanism series on Yellow Productions and Recordings just released the latest collection 'Africanism Vol. 4' on Tommy Boy Records in the US. Also, check out Bob Sinclar's latest aural travels to Brazil on his full length release Salomé de Bahia.

Toronto-based DJ Todd Sines (Planet E) spins two - count 'em! - two new mixes of techno/house music. The sound may be unfamiliar to some listeners, since Sines has let go of his Detroit style and now incorporates vocals and more organic elements in his mix. Influenced heavily by Underground Resistance and Morton Subotnick, Todd has produced music under the pseudonyms .xtrak, Enhanced, Trait, Cron, ARS, Neriq on labels including Peacefrog, Background and Planet E.
WPS1 DJ Sessions presents DJ Small Change recorded live on June 24, 2004, from the PS1 terrace for the opening of Curious Crystal of Unusual Purity, an exhibition based on the idea of a Wunderkammer, a cabinet of curiosities, with more than 100 works by 35 artists.
Phil Smart is quite the world traveler, racking up more frequent flyer miles than almost anyone. Phil killed the crowd at PS1's "Warm Up" party last year. He's twice been named Australia's top DJ and recently made the move from Sydney to Byron Bay, possibly in search of better waves... In this special mix for WPS1 he plays his own unique brand of tech-house. He's a laidback guy who admits that, "Dance music isn't everything and I see my musical journey continuing as long as my metaphysical journey." We're pretty sure this mix was not done in a cave...
New York based Solu Music is the exotic creation of Howie Caspe and Dano Nathanson; musicians who love good ole R&B, Funk and Soul. That is what makes their music stand out to the dance crowds seeking deep soulful house music. Solu Music made a huge impact on the house scene with their first release, Fade with KimBlee. DJing is one of their loves that feeds and inspires their productions. Enjoy this lovely set prepared specially for WPS1 from the Solu production duo. Check out their latest full length album featuring the vocals of Kai Martin entitled Affirmation.
Roni aka Soul Brother No. 4 brought a bag full of vinyl gems to the WPS1 studios and mixed up a lovely set in our studio we call the ear. Roni's got a nice eclectic vibe pullin' classics from many genres. Roni occasionally hits the decks at Nublu and plays a duel role as Soul Bartender No. 1. He is Jeannie Hopper's favorite bartender... but of course, as he's generous with Hopper's favorite beverage, Tequila. Roni's also an amazing artist. You can find his original one-of-a-kind wears on the lower east side at the Art Fiend, a community based store filled with a collective of artist's wares, on Ludlow off of Delancey. Art Fiend heads to Kyoto, Japan with a opening on December 4, 2005 at the Kyoto University Gallery. He's as of late into T-Shirt printing, jewelry, wrist bands, belts & bags. Check out his partner and him in DJ crime as they hit the decks for a new Monday weekly party at The Porch on Avenue C between 7th & 8th streets. (61 minutes)
Spun explores his hip-hop roots with other early influences in this eclectic mix of Miles Davis, Bob James, cartoon and kung-fu soundtracks, trip-hop, acid jazz, Doug E. Fresh and Cheech and Chong - with a healthy dose of cutting and scratching, just to keep things interesting....
This mix by WPS1 DJ curator DJ Spun was recorded live at the Something Wrong party in the saloon at Unit in Tokyo. DJ Spun plays an eclectic mix of forward thinking dance music from the 70s to the present. This was an intimate high energy affair. On this memorable evening Spun was joined by Alex from Tokyo and Force of Nature who have both been featured at P.S.1's Warm Up parties.
DJ Spun recorded live in Tokyo while on the "rong music" tour in January 2005. He was the guest of DJ Alex for his weekly Shibuya FM radio show. Eclectic dance music at it's best. Underknown and unreleased tracks from Kool & the Gang, Fela, Black Dice, Mudd, and much more...

Three great sessions recorded live in the Clocktower.
From hybridmagazine.com: DJ Swingsett has mixed an impressive compilation,
Sun Runners, for ISM records, a label that hosts a variety of both new and
established artists from the New York underground. The compilation is comprised
of various eclectic sounds from artists such as DJ Spinna, J. Warrin, DJ Wally,
Duermo, Takuya, and Twilight Circus among others. The material on Sun Runners
ranges from drum & bass, dub, and abstract hip-hop to Brazilian percussive
numbers as well as wonderful vocals like the passionate Recognize by J. Warrin
and Carol C.
Thomas's style is eclectic to say the least. He started his career as a DJ and producer in Cambridge, England with his pals the Tonka Sound System then moved to San Francisco as part of the legendary Wicked Crew. After moving to NYC several years ago he started the groundbreaking band A.R.E. Weapons and along with DJ and production partner Eric Duncan started the infamous Rub-n-Tug parties considered by many to be "The Disco Theater of Manhattan". We say, "expect the unexpected" which is unusual in dance music these days...
Oliver Stumm and Domie Clausen form the NYC-based production and DJ duo A Touch Of Class (ATOC). They founded A Touch Of Class Recordings in 1999 as a platform to release their own music material as well as help launch other acts. ATOC fit style-wise somewhere between Electro/Disco and Dance Rock, combining real instruments with electronics. They have delivered an impressive roster of production work and have had numerous chart toppers in the U.K., including Scissor Sisters' Comfortably Numb and Filthy Gorgeous, The Ones' Flawless, and Xavier's Give Me The Night. They are known for both discovering the then unknown Scissor Sisters as well as producing and releasing the band's first few singles before signing them to a major label. ATOC have remixed artists such as The Gossip, Le Tigre, A.R.E. Weapons, Erasure, et al. to high reviews and DJ play. Their work is best heard on their critically acclaimed 2003 retrospective A Touch Of Class Sucks! and the 2007 follow up A Touch Of Class Still Sucks!.
DJ Tyson Drum 'n Bass music mix. Tyson's FORMS party is the longest-running and most vibrant monthly DJ party in
the Netherlands. (It recently celebrated its 5th anniversary.) Tyson has performed all over the world, including the U.S. -- in New York at
P.S.1 and Konkrete Jungle, and in the Viper Room and Respect in Los Angeles, to name just a few locations.
Musical revivalist Ulysses has been a working deejay since 1991, when he started New Orleans' first techno-radio show. Since relocating to his native New York several years ago, he has been a producer for several labels, most recently reworking Alexander Robotnick for Ulysses' own company, Scatalogics, as well as remixing Le Tigre for Universal. Be sure to check out the video for his latest track, "Immaterial".
Mexico's Bounce Fiesta comes to the Web! From Tijuana and Mexico City, Uriel, Bounce Fiesta cofounder, plays funky house grooves with a tech-y West Coast twist.
With Alexis, his partner, DJ Uriel has been throwing down for over 10 years all over Mexico at their huge Bounce Fiesta rave parties. He grew up listening to funk, reggae, hip- hop, soul and techno - Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and Prince were his favorites - and deejayed for over 10 years at such legendary Mexico City nightspots as the Pervert Lounge, El Colmillo and Club 303. He started producing large "Fiestas del House" under the production name "Bounce" and with his partner, Alexis, took them throughout Mexico, where they were known to spin alongside legendary deejays Derrick May, Halo, Hipp-e, Mark Farina and Mark E. Quark. In the U.S., Uriel has done his magic at DNA in San Francisco, Baktun in New York, and at the Winter Music Conference in Miami.
Ben Watt celebrates 25 years in the music business as Everything But the Girl with partner Tracey Thorn and the past ten years in clubland: producing, remixing, and running his own label, Buzzin' Fly. Ben Watt contributes a new mix here that's smooth, sexy and trippy with some fabulous vocals from Thorn, Bjork, and Salif. Buzzin' Fly has released an amazing series of singles for the DJ-minded and also put the releases into timeless music compilations for the CD nation of music lovers, including the latest, Buzzin' Fly Vol. 3. Winter Music Conference: New Stuff with Jeannie Hopper, Pt. 1 listen |

First broadcast April 10, 2006
With spring comes the Winter Music Conference. Well, it used to happen in winter... 'Anywho', Jeannie hopped along South Beach's silicone strip collecting new tunes for her record basket from the tens of thousands of DJ's, producers and independent music industry folks that invade the strip for this annual dance conference soiree. This year was interesting with technology really turning the tables. Turning the turntables into secondary pieces of equipment that is with the CD player and digital files ruling the DJ booth. Many tunes were transferred via the web prior to the conference with most handed out on CDRs at the conference and a very small smattering of vinyl passed about. But the collector in us all will have us hunting down that vinyl regardless of what we choose to use to rock a crowd. Enjoy as there's plenty more to come. Also check out the various interviews Jeannie captured before, during and after the conference here for WPS1. Check her on-going show Liquid Love and Liquid Sound Lounge plus podcasts available right here at WPS1.org. Recorded on April 1, 2006.
